Seed Co-op seeks new Directors

The Seed Co-op is seeking to appoint a Marketing and Communications Director and a Finance Director to join its Board.

The Seed Cooperative’s mission is to support the collective work of those striving to make agroecological farming and food sovereignty a reality. The Seed Co-operative grows, processes, and sells open-pollinated organic and biodynamic seed for professional and recreational growers. Its shareholders are mainly the community of growers it serves.

Marketing and Communications Director

The successful candidate will have personal and professional credibility with proven marketing campaign experience, including digital marketing and copywriting. The role requires strong interpersonal and relationship-building abilities and presentation and networking capabilities.

Most of the work can be undertaken remotely. The six Board meetings a year will be held in person at various locations within the UK when circumstances allow.

The time commitment estimate is 36 days per year for an initial 3-year period. These are essentially pro-bono positions, although a modest honorarium is available if needed, plus travelling expenses and project work can be paid.

Purpose:
  •  Develop and continuously improve the Seed Cooperative’s intelligence regarding current and potential customer and shareholder communities to differentiate and prioritise offers.
  • Optimise the quality, frequency and format of interaction with these communities to increase sales and turnover in line with the range and quantity of seed supplies available and grow the shareholder base.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain and monitor a rolling three-year sales and marketing plan, within the context of an integrated business strategy, including competitor research, advertising, social media, marketing content and commercial partnerships.
  • Convene and optimise the contribution of a sub-committee of subject matter experts and staff involved in marketing.
  • Ensure that relevant staff have the opportunity for professional development and have appropriate external professional support.

Finance Director

The successful candidate will have a recognised accounting qualification and requisite experience. The role requires strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, access to a network of contacts within banking and finance to benefit the Co-op and expertise in external representation, delivering presentations and engaging stakeholders. Ability to work as part of a team of directors to the agreed overall strategy and to develop financial strategy

Most of the work can be undertaken remotely. The six Board meetings a year will be held in person at various locations within the UK when circumstances allow.

The time commitment estimate is 26 days per year for an initial 3-year period. This is essentially a pro-bono position, although a modest honorarium is available if needed, plus travelling expenses and project work can be paid.

Purpose:

  • To improve and sustain the financial health and viability of the Co-op. Responsibilities:
  • Develop, maintain and monitor a rolling three-year rolling capital and investment plan within the context of an integrated business strategy.
  • Secure and negotiate the capital and debt finance needed for the development of the Co-op.
  • Convene and optimise the contribution of a sub-committee of subject matter experts and staff involved in finance.
  • Establish and build a strong, effective and constructive working relationship with the Managing Director and relevant staff.
